Is it worth it?
You've found a boat that looks right. The photos are good, the price sits a bit under what similar ones go for, and the seller seems fine on the phone. Then the doubt starts. Why is it cheap? Has it been under water? Is the title even theirs to sell? That's the gap this fills. You enter the HIN off the transom, pay $29.99, and get back a nine page PDF covering theft reports, salvage and total loss records, branded titles, NMVTIS entries, recalls, past names and registration data for the US and Canada. Worth being clear about what it is. Boat-Alert says this plainly themselves: it's a search service, not a guarantee. They check the databases they can reach and report what comes back. If a boat was wrecked and quietly repaired with no insurance claim, nothing shows. Boat records are also patchier than car records, so a clean report is weaker reassurance than people assume. Even so, $29.99 against a five figure purchase isn't really a decision. One theft or salvage hit pays for itself many times over. Just don't let a clean report stand in for a surveyor. They answer different questions: one looks at the paperwork, the other at whether the stringers are rotten.
