Is it worth it?
Most people who end up looking at lay betting have been burned backing winners that didn't win. Laying feels like the smarter seat: you only need the favourite to get beaten, and favourites get beaten constantly. Altitude is someone else doing that picking for you. Joe Walmsley emails a short list of low priced forecast favourites each morning, you lay them at Betfair SP, and that's your day done in a few minutes once you've got the hang of it. The seller's headline is a strike rate over 80 percent from a two week trial in July, with a profit figure to match. Worth noticing: the results table further down the same page, covering the days since launch, contains plenty of losers, and the running total dips well into the red more than once in the rows shown. That isn't a scandal, it's how laying goes, but it does mean the 80 percent figure describes one good fortnight rather than what you should expect. None of it is independently verified. The arithmetic matters more than the strike rate here. Lay a horse around 2.4 and a loser costs you noticeably more than a winner pays, so a high hit rate is what keeps you level, not what makes you rich. Their profit figures also assume 2 percent commission, which is lower than many Betfair accounts pay. Do that sum with your own rate first.
Pros
- Seven days free before any money is taken
- Tips arrive early enough to place bets before racing
- Results are published daily, losers included
- Cancel any time, no lock-in
Cons
- The published results since launch show real losing runs, not the trial's 80 percent
- Profit figures assume 2 percent commission, lower than many accounts pay
- The page says nothing about refunds beyond cancelling the subscription
What you get
A daily email, sent before noon UK time, giving that day's lay selections: date, race, time and horse, to be laid at Betfair starting price. A staking guide arrives as a PDF attached to the welcome email. There's a results table on the site you can follow along with. Nothing to install. It's £31.99 a month after a 7 day free trial, billed every 30 days.
Before you buy
- You need a funded Betfair exchange account, and enough in it to cover liability, which is bigger than the return on each lay
- Check your own Betfair commission rate and redo their profit figures with it
- Set a calendar reminder for day 6 of the trial, since card details go in up front and billing starts automatically
Who it suits
Someone who already lays on the exchange, understands liability, and wants selections handed to them. Not for a beginner or anyone hoping for a steady monthly income.
