Is it worth it?
You've found a car that looks about right. The price is a little under book, the seller has a reasonable story, the photos are clean. Then you start wondering about what you can't see. Was it sitting in flood water two states ago? Has the odometer been wound back? Is there a lien on it that becomes your problem the day after you hand over the cash? That's the job a VINALERT report is meant to do. You put in the VIN, pay, and get back what public records say about that one car: title history, salvage and total loss entries, flood and theft records, odometer readings, accident and airbag data where it exists. Two things the page doesn't make obvious. Its own title says $17, while the product also gets sold around $9.99, so check what the checkout actually charges. And the billing is set up as recurring, not a one off. If you're checking a single car, find the cancellation instructions before you pay rather than after. It's also not your only option. NICB's VINCheck is free for theft and salvage flags. Carfax and AutoCheck cost more but are what a dealer or a private buyer will recognise later. Treat any report as one input. A mechanic's pre-purchase inspection still catches things no database holds.
