Is it worth it?
You're on a stranger's driveway with a car that looks fine, a seller who seems fine, and a few thousand dollars you can't afford to set on fire. One wing looks a shade newer than the rest. He says it was a scuff in a car park. Maybe it was. That moment is what VinCheckUp is for. You type the 17 character VIN from the windshield or door jamb, the site tells you what records it found, then you register and pay to read the whole thing. Inside: accident entries with dates and rough severity, title brands (salvage, flood, junk, lemon buyback, theft), odometer readings across the years so a rollback stands out, sale and lien records, recalls, and whether the car ever worked as a taxi, police car or fleet vehicle. The data comes from the national title system plus other record sources. It works on cars, trucks, vans, RVs and motorcycles. One review on their own page says it took a while to figure out how to use it. That rings true, the flow is clunkier than the big names. The honest limit, and it applies to every report of this kind: a crash settled privately in cash never enters any database. A clean report means nothing bad was reported, not that nothing bad happened. Use it to rule cars out, and still get a mechanic to look.
