Is it worth it?

You're staring at a bag of kibble that costs more than your own weekly shop, and the dog is itchy, chunky round the middle, or just bored of the stuff. Maybe the vet said the word obesity and you left feeling told off. That's usually who ends up reading this page. It's an ebook about cooking for your dog. You get 50 plus recipes covering meals, snacks and frozen treats, a method for working out how much food your dog needs each day, a list of fruits that are safe and ones that aren't, and sections on making dry food and on what to watch for the first time you try it. The sample recipe on the page (banana, Brazil nut, two eggs, coconut oil) tells you the level: simple, quick, store cupboard. The real value is permission to start. Plenty of people don't cook for their dog because they're worried about getting it wrong, and a portion calculation plus a stack of easy recipes gets them off the fence. Where I'd be careful: the page promises you'll avoid diabetes, heart trouble, high blood pressure and skin problems, and it offers nothing to back that up. Home cooked diets can also run short on calcium and certain minerals over months if nobody checks the balance. Use it for recipes and a starting point, and keep your vet in the loop, especially if your dog already has a condition.

Pros

  • One off price, nothing recurring
  • Recipes are short and use ordinary ingredients
  • Gives you portion amounts, not just recipes
  • Cheaper per month than premium kibble if you actually cook

Cons

  • Health claims about diabetes, heart and skin problems come with no evidence
  • Long term home cooking can miss minerals without vet input, which the page glosses over
  • Page never says how many pages it is or what format arrives
