Is it worth it?

Chameleons are one of those pets that look easy and aren't. You buy one, set up a tank, and then a fortnight later it's sitting there with its eyes shut and you're at midnight googling "chameleon not eating" and getting eleven contradictory answers from forum posts dated 2009. That's the actual problem this book is aimed at: not a lack of information, a lack of information you can trust. It's an ebook, not a course or a vet service. Robert Jones keeps four chameleons and writes from that plus research, so treat it as an experienced keeper's advice rather than a veterinary text. The page leans on curiosity hooks (the "No.1 cause of death", the "one object you can NEVER have near your chameleon") which is a sales tactic, though the underlying answers are real husbandry points most beginners genuinely don't know. The useful bit is the pre-purchase and setup material. Getting humidity, UVB, gut-loaded feeders and enclosure size right from day one prevents most of what kills captive chameleons. Having it in one place beats stitching it together from scattered threads. If you already keep reptiles and read care sheets properly, you'll find a lot of it familiar. If you're about to buy your first one, or you've just got one and you're nervous, it's a sensible cheap read before you make expensive mistakes.

Pros

  • Written by someone who actually keeps several species
  • Covers the before-you-buy decision, not just care
  • Instant download, cheap next to one vet visit
  • Prevention focus, which is where most chameleon deaths are avoidable

Cons

  • No substitute for an exotics vet if the animal is already sick
  • Species coverage isn't specified, so your particular chameleon may get limited treatment
  • Page doesn't state price, page count or file format

What you get

A downloadable ebook by Robert Jones, who keeps veiled, Jackson's and flapneck chameleons. It covers what to think about before buying one, a shopping list for the setup, humidity, lighting and temperature conditions, 12 signs of an unhealthy chameleon, foods that are toxic, one object to keep away from the enclosure, and a section on breeding.

Before you buy

  • Check the refund window and the file format before paying
  • Find an exotics vet in your area regardless, no book replaces one
  • If you already own reptile care books, skim what's covered first

Who it suits

First-time or about-to-be chameleon owners who want one trustworthy source instead of forum guesswork.
