Is it worth it?

You get into bed exhausted and your brain starts up. Or you get through the day on coffee and hit 3pm like a wall. That is the state this is aimed at: people who cannot switch off on demand and cannot really switch on either. What it actually is, once you are past the sales page, is audio. You open the app, choose a track based on what you want from it, put headphones on and lie down with your eyes closed for the session. The claim is that the audio nudges your nervous system into a rest state, so you do not have to relax your way there yourself. Take the page's language with care. Patented is not the same as proven, and the page leans on big names and pro sports teams rather than studies you can look up. It does not tell you which trial showed what. That said, plenty of long term users swear by it, and the honest floor is this: thirty quiet minutes with headphones on, eyes shut and no phone does something for most people, whether or not the specific audio is doing the work. The seven day trial is the right way to find out, because responses to this sort of thing are very personal. The catch is the rolling subscription, and the page will not show you a price until you hand over card details.

Pros

  • Seven days free before any charge
  • No pills, supplements or stimulants involved
  • Needs no skill, training or practice
  • Even at worst, it is enforced quiet rest time

Cons

  • Recurring billing with no price shown on the page
  • Big health claims with no studies you can actually check
  • Needs headphones, quiet and lying still, so not usable on demand anywhere

What you get

A subscription to the NuCalm app on your phone or tablet. Inside is a library of audio tracks sorted by what you want from them: fall asleep, nap, recover, calm down, focus. You pick one, put headphones on, close your eyes and stay still for the length of the track, usually somewhere between 20 and 60 minutes. Nothing physical arrives in the post.

Before you buy

  • Find the cancel option on day one and note whether billing runs through the app store or the website
  • Check the price and billing cycle at checkout, plus what happens if you want a refund later
  • Make sure you have decent headphones and 20 to 40 minutes you can genuinely protect most days

Who it suits

Best for someone who lies awake most nights, has headphones and a quiet half hour, and will actually use the free week to test it. Not for anyone wanting a quick fix they can use at a desk.
