Is it worth it?

If you've eaten the same chicken, rice and broccoli for six weeks and you're starting to dread your own lunch, you already know why something like this exists. Most people don't quit a training plan because the training is hard. They quit because the food is boring, and boring food is what makes Friday takeaway feel inevitable. Anabolic Cooking is Dave Ruel's cookbook built around exactly that. Recipes shaped to fit a bodybuilding or fat loss style of eating, with real attention paid to the stuff people usually cut out, so protein baking, brownies, muffins. As a cookbook, that's a sensible thing to buy. Recipes plus a bit of batch cooking structure genuinely does fix adherence for a lot of people, and adherence is most of the game. What it is not is a training programme, or a mechanism that builds muscle on its own. The page promises gaining muscle fast and getting shredded while eating brownies daily, and that's the seller talking. Food doesn't work faster because a recipe is labelled anabolic, and no evidence is offered for that framing. The recipes can still be useful without it. If you already cook confidently and improvise around macros, you'll find less here than someone who stands in the kitchen at 7pm with no idea what to make.

Pros

  • Aimed squarely at the adherence problem, not willpower
  • Includes desserts and baking, so the diet feels less punishing
  • Digital, so you have it the same day you pay
  • Useful even if you never touch a barbell again

Cons

  • Billing is recurring, and the sales page doesn't make that obvious
  • The page shown doesn't state price, page count or exactly what's in the bundle
  • The anabolic branding oversells what a recipe can do
  • It's been around since 2009, so some of it will feel dated

What you get

A digital cookbook you download after paying, not a physical book. The core is a set of recipes aimed at fitness eating, mains through to desserts like brownies and blueberry muffins, with an emphasis on cooking a week's food ahead. The page doesn't itemise page count, bonuses or whether full meal plans are included, so read the order page before you pay.

Before you buy

  • Check the checkout screen for a rebill, what it renews at, and how to cancel
  • Check the refund terms and window before paying, the page doesn't state them
  • Check whether measurements are US cups or metric if that matters to you

Who it suits

Someone training consistently who keeps falling off the diet because the food is dull and they're out of ideas
